Manage exam stress by taking care of yourself
We can't say it enough: taking care of yourself is the most important step in managing stress before an exam. Neglecting your lifestyle directly affects your mood, performance and relationships. Everyone is different, but there are universal tips that work for the vast majority of students. Let's say your exam is tomorrow, the day after tomorrow or at the end of the week, here's what we advise you to do:
- Eat your favourite foods! Choose protein-rich foods such as dairy products, nuts, eggs and wholemeal bread.
- Drink water! Our bodies need 1.5 litres of water a day. Why not buy a nice insulated water bottle to encourage better drinking habits?
- Relax! Don't overdo it on the revision. Spend time with your friends, listen to your favourite songs, play a video game. It doesn't matter what you do as long as it makes you feel good.
- Take time to breathe! Try some coherent breathing techniques or a fifteen-minute meditation. It might be a long term practice, but one-off meditation can help to manage exam stress.
Manage exam stress by getting active
The benefits of exercise during exam periods are undeniable. Physical activity releases dopamine and endorphins, two hormones linked to pleasure. They have the effect of reducing stress. Sport not really your thing? Find an activity that works for you. Go for a run, get some fresh air, dance for fun, or do some yoga. Most important of all: relax!
