How to apply for housing benefit (ALS) as a student

If you're finding it difficult to cover the cost of your student accommodation, financial support may be available to help reduce your housing expenses. Depending on your income, personal circumstances and the type of accommodation you live in, you may be eligible for ALS (Allocation de Logement Sociale), a French housing allowance designed to support tenants with their rent payments. While some students may qualify for APL (Aide Personnalisée au Logement), this guide focuses specifically on the steps required to apply for ALS and what you need to know before submitting your application.

Steps to apply for ALS (Allocation de Logement Sociale)

1. Check your eligibility

Before starting your application, make sure you meet the eligibility requirements for ALS. Eligibility is generally based on factors such as your household situation, your financial resources, the type of accommodation you occupy.

2. Gather the required documents

To complete your application, you will typically need the following documents:

• A valid ID or passport
• Your tenancy agreement (rental contract)
• Proof of income (tax notice, payslips or other supporting documents)
• Bank account details (RIB)
• Proof of residence, such as a rent receipt or utility bill

3. Create a CAF account

If you do not already have one, create an account with the CAF (Caisse d’Allocations Familiales) through its online portal. Students who cannot access online services may also submit their application by post.

4. Complete the ALS application form

Fill in the ALS application form carefully, either online or by downloading the paper version. Make sure all information is accurate and up to date to avoid delays in processing your claim.

5. Submit your application

Once completed, submit your application through your CAF account and upload the required supporting documents. If applying by post, send the completed form together with all requested paperwork to your local CAF office.

6. Wait for CAF's decision

CAF will review your application and assess your eligibility. Processing times can vary and may take several weeks. You will be notified of the outcome through your online account or by mail.

7. Receive your housing allowance

If your application is approved, ALS payments will begin shortly afterwards. Depending on your situation, the allowance may be:

Paid directly to your landlord, reducing the rent you need to pay; or

Deposited into your personal bank account.

8. Keep your information up to date

To continue receiving ALS throughout your studies, remember to update your CAF account whenever your circumstances change.
