The Jardin des Plantes district and the University of Montpellier

Sharing

Setting your sights on university studies in Montpellier? It's a great choice, especially if you find accommodation in the Jardin des Plantes area. This part of Montpellier is close to the universities, but also to the old town and city centre shops, plus it has plenty of services of its own. And if you're looking for a rental flat, try the Montpellier Carré du Roi student residence

Student life in Montpellier

With around fifteen campuses welcoming no fewer than 51,000 students every year, Montpellier University is one of France's most popular. In addition to a range of courses covering a variety of fields, from medicine and law to literature and the arts, the faculties and the city offer high-quality services and facilities:

  • a rich and vibrant community life on campus and in all the disticts
  • an excellent network of free bus and tram services at weekends and all week from January 2024 onwards
  • top-notch learning facilities including large university libraries, media libraries, museums and debate halls
  • a wide range of digital, sport and leisure services

The Jardin des Plantes district and student leisure activities

Boasting the oldest botanical garden in France, the majestic St Peter cathedral, it's very own Arc de Triomphe and the Promenade du Peyrou, the Jardin des Plantes district is also known as the King's square (Carré du roi). It's one of the prettiest spots in Montpellier city centre. With its lovely green spaces and renowned architectural heritage, it's just a stone's throw from Ecusson, the historic heart of the city and Montpellier's commercial and cultural hub. In addition to the many activities for students on campus, there are plenty of opportunities here too:

  • Fabre museum, Panacée and  MOCO for art lovers
  • Pavillon populaire for photography fans
  • Bookshops of all kinds
  • Private mansions and other architectural curiosities
  • Small theatres, concert halls, nightclubs and dance cafés.
