Where to swim near Aix-en-Provence?

Aix-en-Provence is a famous university town around thirty kilometres from Marseille. The town has a rich historical heritage, it was home to Paul Cézanne, and a magnificent natural environment. It enjoys a lovely warm climate that's perfect for relaxing and swimming. But where's the best place to swim near Aix-en-Provence?

 

Wild swimming spots near Aix-en-Provence

Whether you like rivers, lakes, ponds or calanques, here's a selection of the best places to cool off this summer:

  • Bimont lake: around twenty kilometres east of Aix-en-Provence 
  • Berrelake: 40 km away, near Vitrolles
  • Les calanques des eaux salées: 30 minutes south-west of Aix-en-Provence
  • Les calanques de Cassis: 45 kilometres south of the town towards Marseille
  • Jaï beach in Marignane
  • Le Vallon Sourn: a magnificent natural area in the Var department
  • Peyrolles lake and leisure centre, just an hour's drive away, ideal for a family day out.
  • Buissonnades lake in Oraison, north of Aix-en-Provence, and its awesome leisure centre

If you're looking for a refreshing break in or near Aix,you have:

  • Sextius thermal baths: this chic, elegant spa offers a bathing area as well as a treatment and wellness area.
  • The municipal swimming pool in Aix-en-Provence: the Yves Blanc swimming pool has a very large pool, plus a slide and a play area for younger children.
  • Durance river: near Aix, a great spot for a swim and a picnic in the shade.

 

Getting around Aix-en-Provence and the surrounding area

You can get to all of these sites using Aix-en-Provence's public transport system, and the bus company Aix-en-Bus. You can also hire a bike or buy a regional train ticket. And, of course, you can always carpool!
